Microsoft today announced the Windows Azure platform appliance—a Windows Azure cloud-in-a-box system enabling the creation of private Windows Azure systems. The platform appliance will be an all-in-one combination of server hardware, networking infrastructure, storage, and software. As you can see, Microsoft continues what’s been a long standing trend for them of spending big on R&D – both as an absolute number and also as a percentage of revenue. Whilst Microsoft has made the (slowish) move to Cloudify a number of its other offerings, Hotmail hasn’t really kept pace with rivals such as Google’s Gmail.
