companies suck at utilising social media ..

.. or so say Siemens Enterprise Communications.

PC World — Companies are doing a poor job of using social networks, such as Facebook and Twitter, to engage their customers and employees. In fact, 70 percent of consumers want to interact with businesses via social media, but only 30 percent of companies are equipped to handle it. [...]

meet Leroy Stick - the guy behind @BPGlobalPR

If you’ve been following the BP spill saga (and who hasn’t?) you’ve probably come across a Twitter account by the name of @BPGlobalPR, an unofficial but hugely popular account created by an – up to now – anonymous commentator.  The account has gathered a huge following (far more than BP’s official Twitter account) with its [...]

does more money generate higher performance?

Very interesting video from the folks at RSA Animate showing that – as many people will know – throwing more money at a person does not usually illicit a higher level of performance.  There are plenty of other factors at play.

Check out the video below. It’s 11 minutes long, but well worth a watch especially [...]

Ramsay's Business Nightmares v2

Gordon Ramsay’s certainly had his fair share of troubles recently and I’m sure many of his own restaurants have been going through some of the issues highlighted in his ‘Kitchen Nightmares’ series.  If you don’t mind a weeks worth of swearing in one shot I find each episode good ‘train-wreck TV’ viewing.

If you boil each episode [...]

21 random thoughts on product development

Over the years (from about the time that the dinosaurs ruled the Earth) I’ve been involved in developing and shipping many different products:  from hardware to software, on, offline, mobile and most things in-between.

It struck me though that whilst the language may differ, the challenges for each were mostly common.

Given that every day is a [...]

should the ‘fail fast’ culture fail; fast?

My thoughts on [...]

small changes, big ripples. On customer service

An experience I had today reminded me of a recent post that was doing the rounds entitled ‘50 things your customers wish you knew‘

You’d like to hope that a list such as this was simple common sense and you wouldn’t have to spell it out:  unfortunately it isn’t.  And you do.

(warning, this story contains no [...]

If you think ‘yes’, then why?

If ‘no’ then firstly good on you (in my humble opinion), but why do you think not?

Any and all thoughts most welcome.

I’ll give you my lengthier explanation of why I think [...]

thought for the day: business BS

Here are some questions for you.  See if you can recognise any of these in either yourself or your organisation.

If you can, what are you doing about answering them?

- Why do we waste so much time in our working lives undertaking activities that we’ve convinced ourselves are a worthwhile use of time (and I’m not [...]

does your strategy extend beyond the walls of PowerPoint?

Having sat through more than my fair-share of corporate presentations, it always strikes me how many times we see the same stock phrases repeated as if they were some sort of religious mantra or contractual inclusion.

See how many of the following you can recognize:

- Our people are our greatest asset

- Customer service is our #1 [...]
