strong Q1 results from Microsoft: $6.7B net profit. Windows 7 flying.

Microsoft issued a good set of results today – buoyed in part by a very strong start by Windows 7 (not necessarily surprising given how many companys skipped Vista).

The company posted a record $19.02 billion in revenue, a 14 percent increase year-over-year.  Net income / profit was $6.66 billion. There’s $1.71 billion in deferred revenue [...]

iPad launches. Definitely cool, but is it 10/10? Probably not.

Today saw the launch of the Apple iPad. The Internets are awash with acres of data about this thing, and will be for some time to come so I’ll leave a fuller story as an exercise for the reader for now and will offer up a quick summary and a short commentary below.

The technical summary [...]

why Google should acquire Twitter

Wind back the clock to April 2009 and rumours were flying of Google being in talks to acquire Twitter.  Ultimately – largely for financial reasons apparently – that didn’t eventuate.  To date, whilst there have been various alternative suitors touted, Twitter of course remains independent.

I’ve been giving some thought though as to why Google might [...]

‘ultimate’ guide to Google Reader

Whilst we’re not usually given to throwing around words like ‘ultimate’ too lightly here at Edge Nation HQ, this extended guide to getting the most out of Google Reader from the Social Media Guide is certainly comprehensive!  I’m personally a very regular user of Google Reader, finding it an excellent time-saver and a very efficient [...]

ViVu launches video collaboration plug-in for Skype

With over 520 million users, you could definitely say that Skype has proven to be a pretty popular application.  For businesses with inter-office communication needs I’d suggest you’d be mad to be paying for calls over using it for free.

But despite Skype’s success and usefulness as a voice tool (including voice conferencing and single [...]

Newsgator acquires Tomoye

Just a quickie: Newsgator has acquired Tomoye, a social networking platform for Sharepoint. The acqusition makes Newsgator one of the larger enterprise collaboration companies in the Enterprise 2.0 space.

Newsgator began as an Outlook news aggregator. In recent years, it has transformed into a collaboration provider with a focus on Sharepoint.

Tomoye was founded in 2000. Its most significant [...]

hone your MS Office 'skills' through social gameplay

Here’s an interesting idea from the Microsoft Office Labs: Ribbon Hero.  Playing somewhat off of the current popularity of Facebook games such as Farmville, Cafe World etc., the team there have created a training program for Office that awards you ‘points’ and other virtual credits for completing certain tasks (opening a document, adding a style, [...]

India’s SMS-tech, GupShup, raises $12million

A little while back I wrote about an Indian company using SMS as the basis for their successful ‘Twitter-esque’ business.  The interestingly named ‘SMS GupShup’ have announced today that they have raised an additional $12million, courtesy of Charles River Ventures and Helion Venture Partners.

This latest investment takes the total raised by GupShup to $37million and [...]

on company culture. NY Times interview with Sungard CEO

Interesting interview with Cristóbal Conde, president and C.E.O. of SunGard in the New York times online.  In it, Conde talks about his views on micro-managing and trying to keep the lines of communication open (and scalable) across the organisation.

I particularly liked this point, which tallied nicely with part of my ‘seven habits‘ post (shameless plug [...]

seven (bad) habits of highly defective organisations

I recently had the opportunity to undertake an assignment with a company that would have made a perfect Harvard case study in almost every area of how not to build a successful business.  Whilst I obviously can’t name any names, this family-run business had struggled to break out over the past twenty-odd years, despite some [...]
